The way we sign in is changing.
After years of security risks, data leaks, and constant frustration with password management, major platforms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft turned to supporting passkeys - biometric and phishing-resistant credentials.
However, for far too long, Web2 has relied on middlemen and proprietary protocols. In addition, many Web3 ecosystems have developed custom protocols that deny interoperability with the rest of the web.
Liquid Auth is Algorand’s answer: an open, passwordless authentication protocol built for passwordless web login and decentralized authentication, leveraging FIDO2 and WebAuthn standards to power the passkey revolution. And, of course, it is fully decentralized and supports self-sovereign Web3 identity.
With Liquid Auth, users can sign in on any website that supports passkeys for login, using their wallet. No password, no centralized vault, no Big Tech lock-in. Highlights include:
- Web2 - Web3 bridge: Liquid auth works with Web3 applications and with traditional Web2 platforms as well.
- Improved user experience: Enables secure logins powered by Algorand and passkeys, with no passwords and no intermediaries.
- Built on industry standards: Works seamlessly with existing biometrics, fingerprint and facial scanning standards.
- User-sovereign: Keys live in the wallet, derived from your mnemonic, and they are not stored in a company’s database.
- Chain-agnostic: Although developed by Algorand, Liquid Auth can be adopted by any blockchain ecosystem.
The first implementation launches with Pera Wallet using Universal Wallet (24-words), enabling users to authenticate on traditional sites such as GitHub or Amazon using keys derived from their mnemonic. It also allows for Algorand apps to use passkeys as proof of account ownership instead of costly, non-standard SIW(Sign-with-*) flows. This represents a major advance in connecting Web2 and Web3 securely, simply, and in a fully interoperable way.
Liquid Auth is open source and free to integrate, built for developers who want best-in-class security with an effortless user experience. Try it for yourself today!
