ETHCC[8] in Cannes: A big moment for Web3
More than 6,500 developers, researchers, investors, and ecosystem contributors gathered in Cannes, France, from June 30 to July 3 for the eighth Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC). The largest-ever EthCC featured four packed days of talks, panels, and over 300 side events, including 254 officially listed on Luma.
This year’s EthCC felt like a turning point. Conversations focused on real-world adoption, the rise of AI in blockchain, and new momentum for DeFi. Robinhood grabbed attention with its on-chain stock token launch in Europe. At the same time, Vitalik Buterin reminded everyone that decentralization and security cannot take a back seat as institutional adoption accelerates.
AlgoCan[nes]: What we set out to do
On July 1, during EthCC week, we hosted AlgoCan[nes], a full day dedicated to bringing developers and ecosystem partners together. We explored interoperability, AI-driven finance, and payments—three crucial topics shaping the future of Web3.
We partnered with P2P.org, Folks Finance, Valar Solutions, AIDA, and Nodely to create an experience that blended learning with hands-on building.
After taking time to reflect, we’re excited to share the highlights with you.
The day featured:
- Tech sessions on cross-chain interoperability, zk-enabled applications, and smart contract execution.
- Discussions on AI agents and blockchain convergence, including how autonomous systems interact with smart contracts.
- Deep dives into stablecoins and payment infrastructure for institutional finance and real-world adoption.
- A networking lunch and a sunset cocktail mixer overlooking the Cannes waterfront.
Why interoperability still matters
As Web3 grows, fragmentation is still a big problem. Developers should not have to stay locked in with one chain.
At AlgoCan[nes], we discussed how Algorand is building infrastructure that enables smooth, secure, cross-chain experiences so liquidity, applications, and users can move without friction. We announced our integration with Wormhole NTT, and Sushant Kurren, Wormhole's Strategic Growth Lead, described how Wormhole works and its advantages for developers.

Zero-knowledge, real world
Privacy and verifiability are quickly becoming non-negotiables for blockchain applications.
During AlgoCan[nes], we introduced AlgoPlonk, a framework to build zero-knowledge applications on Algorand.
As a case study, we showcased HermesVault, an application for private transactions on Algorand. We explored how zero-knowledge proofs can enhance security, compliance, and user trust in real-world use cases. This session showed how developers can start building zk-enabled apps today and why these tools are critical for the next wave of Web3 adoption.

AI, stablecoins and payments: Moving beyond the hype
AI was everywhere at EthCC, and at AlgoCan[nes], the focus was on practical use cases. How can AI agents interact with smart contracts? How can they optimize stablecoin flows and enforce agreements? Combined with Algorand’s speed and predictable costs, these benefits are the future of intelligent, autonomous financial systems that deliver real utility.

Two impactful workshops
One of the best parts of AlgoCan[nes] was giving developers practical ways to learn and build. We ran two complementary workshops:
Getting Started on Algorand
Led by Sara Jane Kenny, Algorand Jr Dev Community Advocate, the workshop explained the basics of using AI and Algorand’s developer tooling, AlgoKit, to start building blockchain proof of concepts without writing a single line of code. It also highlighted our popular Web3 Masterclasses that give non-tech Founders a clear path to building their own projects.

Deep dive into Algorand
Led by Brian Whippo, Head of Developer Relations, and Marco Podien, Senior Developer Advocate, the How to Get Started on Algorand as a Dev session was for advanced builders. It covered several key components of smart contracts in Algorand and how to kickstart their development.
The star of the show was a remarkable comparison of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Algorand Virtual Machine (AVM), including their differences, performance considerations, and projects across ecosystems.
Both sessions were packed, and the conversations that followed were some of the most engaging of the week.

Founders and Funders session: The role of startups in the Algorand ecosystem
AlgoCan[nes] also put a spotlight on founders. Startups are at the heart of innovation, pushing new ideas in DeFi, RWA, AI, and payments. Our Founders and Funders networking session connected entrepreneurs with Algorand accelerator programs and strategic partners to help turn bold ideas into successful projects.
