CoinDesk reported that the Algorand Foundation announced that it will darken Times Square for an hour on April 21 to highlight its commitment to sustainability ahead of Earth Day. This initiative aims to debunk myths about blockchain's carbon impact and bring attention to the environmental costs of Times Square billboards. The event will start with environmentalist messages on billboards before going dark at 8 p.m. ET. Algorand uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, which is more energy-efficient than the proof-of-work systems used by Bitcoin and Ethereum. The Foundation estimates that darkening Times Square for one hour saves 6,500 kilowatt hours of electricity, equivalent to 350 million transactions on the Algorand blockchain. CEO Staci Warden emphasized the goal of setting an example for other blockchain projects to follow in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.
