Innovation in Nigeria is quickly recognized and receives a warm reception. Nigerians leapfrogged traditional communication technologies, jumping straight to mobile phones over landlines and using laptops over desktop computers. Now, blockchain technology could be the latest catalyst for progress. Blockchain has the potential to usher in a new era of development for Nigeria, propelling the nation and its African counterparts forward at speed and with efficiency.

The government recognized the potential of this technology when it developed the National Blockchain Policy, which was signed into law in 2023. This policy is a roadmap for the adoption of blockchain technology in Nigeria and identifies talent development and innovation as key areas for adoption in the country.

Algorand Foundation's efforts in Nigeria stand out in fulfilling the objectives of the National Blockchain Policy. We have empowered hundreds of Nigerian blockchain software developers with the necessary skills to become industry-ready professionals. We have built a strong pipeline of innovation for projects and fostered close collaboration with federal and state governments to grow Nigeria’s digital economy.

Here is a look at some of our achievements since late 2023.

Blog - Nigeria timeline 1December 2023: Nurturing a thriving developer ecosystem

With support from the Algorand Foundation, over 500 software developers across Nigeria received comprehensive training through online and in-person developer bootcamps in 2023. The Nigerian developer community played a significant part in Build-A-Bull, Algorand's Global Hackathon in 2023. A team from Nigeria took first place in the Consumer and Impact tracks, while another achieved a second-place finish in the DeFi track.

Building on this momentum, the Foundation organized events specifically aimed at the Plateau State of Nigeria. Over 50 software developers in this region participated in workshops, gaining valuable blockchain development skills.

A policy dinner brought together senior members of the Plateau State Government, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC), and the aspiring developers, helping forge connections and promote the exploration of blockchain's potential in the state.

The Government of Plateau State then launched a collaboration with the Foundation. This partnership explores the potential of blockchain technology through the development of pilot programs across various sectors. The Government of Plateau State, responsible for overseeing crucial services like identity and revenue management, is well-positioned to leverage the security and efficiency of blockchain technology. By working with the Foundation, Plateau State has the opportunity to further explore innovative ways to improve government services and empower its citizens.

Blog - Nigeria timeline 2February 2024: Supporting local community and culture

The Foundation sponsored the Incredible Music Festival (IMF) held in Jos, Plateau State, from February 22 to 24. The Foundation also collaborated with Algogems, a leading NFT marketplace, to host a workshop during the IMF. This workshop aimed to empower local creatives by introducing them to Web3 and equipping them with the tools to participate in the digital economy.

May 2024: Expanding software developer knowledge with #PythonMay

The launch of the #PythonMay series further demonstrated Algorand's dedication to developer education in Nigeria. This initiative began with a webinar about Python on Algorand, followed by introductory office hours and an in-person meetup in Abuja for intermediate blockchain developers. This series of events onboarded over 200 software developers to build on Algorand.
