This paper addresses the issue of sustainability in retail sales and proposed system for environmental product rating where trust is ensured through a distributed ledger. Their prototype, based on the Algorand blockchain, "has shown promising results in terms of throughput and cost efficiency", and the authors state that "We believe that the prototype has the potential to revolutionize loyalty systems and promote sustainable practices." The study otherwise shares insights on how to launch uniform rewards programs, motivate customers to purchase eco-friendly products, and how retailers can manage rewards and eco-score categories.
